Annual Number of CABG Surgeries
Why is this important?
This is an operation for patients with coronary heart disease. CABG surgery diverts blood flow away from the narrowing or blockage in coronary arteries with another piece of blood vessel. A CABG also can reduce and relieve pain in patients who have angina and are taking medication that does not work. This surgery can improve the health of patients with severe narrowing of the left main coronary artery or the three major coronary arteries, thus restoring the blood supply to the heart muscle.

The Leapfrog Group recommends hospitals annually perform 450 CABG surgeries. Studies have shown better results at high-volume hospitals. York Hospital has hired additional surgeons to increase the number of recommended CABG surgeries which should be performed on an annual basis. The Leapfrog Group is an initiative driven by organizations that buy health care and who are working to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. |
