Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP)

What is SCIP? The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), initiated in 2003, is a national quality partnership of organizations committed to improving the safety of surgical care through the reduction of complications after surgery. The ultimate goal is to save lives by reducing the incidence of surgical complications 25 percent by 2010 in four target areas: surgical site infections and cardiac, respiratory and blood clot complications. Both Gettysburg Hospital and York Hospital are participating in this project.

How do we compare?  Experts agree on the following ways to prevent surgical complications.

Prophylactic antibiotic discontinued within 24 hours after surgery end time
Prophylactic antibiotic received within one hour prior to surgical incision
Prophylactic antibiotic selection for surgical patients
